I am looking for a used car. Because I dont have a credit history and dont even qualify for credit cards, I am assuming I dont get a loan to buy a car...so looking for cheap cars I can pay cash. So, I found this car, 1994 ford with 168k miles on it. I know nothing about car so I am asking you all here if I should go for it or not. He said its a good transportation car but wouldnt take it to long trips and sort... That comment worries me.
What should I look at for used car shopping?!

For $900 you're going to get $3,900 worth of trouble. Don't you think?

what type of ford is it? The tarus from that year had a lot of recalls so don't get it if its a tarus. I'd try to find a toyota or a honda with that many miles on it or more for that kind of price. You can run those cars into the ground and they'd still survive

Even though the year is pretty good, the mileage kind of suggests that the engine is near its end. So even though you'll get a cheap car, the amount of money you'll put into it to keep it alive will not be worth the cost. I'm sure if you browse car dealerships some may offer you special finance. Actually, considering you don't have a credit history, you're the perfect candidate for a new car, because it will help build your credit score if you make your car payments on time.

I would not buy it. The higher the milage, the more frequent things are going to go out, usually. At 168,000 thats pretty high milage. And if he wouldn't take it on long trips then its obviously not very reliable. So no I wouldn't get it. I would see if your parents have good credit and if they would co-sign on a loan for you. You should be able to get a small loan that way. Good luck with getting a decent car.

No Ford with 168k miles on it will get you where you're going for long. If it was a Honda, Acura, Toyota or Nissan, 168k miles would be very little. If you really want to find a good deal, try craigslist.org (for your city) or find an auction site, such as http://gsaauctions.gov/gsaauctions/gsaau... that specializes in fleet vehicles or law enforcement seizures. Search in your state and bid accordingly. You will be surprised what kind of deals you can get this way. Most fleet vehicles are well maintained and info is readily available, with a phone call, regarding their current condition. Good luck!

Take the car to a qualified mechanic and pay him to check the car over. This will let you make an informed decision about buying the vehicle. Be prepared to pay around $100 for a good thought check of the car. It is money well spent if it keeps you from buying a problem!

unlike the others, I like fords..and have one with a ton of miles on it....but unless you love working your butt off fixing the car you are talking about, forget it...
Offer $50, and if he takes it, sell it to the junkyard for $100...you will have an extra 50 to spend on a good car....
