I'm looking to get a car for college that will get me from a to b, and is cheap enough that i don't need a loan.
I found a 1980 honda civic for $900. Some friends have been giving me a hard time and suggesting i stay away from a car that old, but as neither them or I know that much about cars i'm looking for some good advice....
This is as much as i know about it:
-5 speed manual transmission
-150000 miles
-new radiator
-short shift
-6 x 9 speakers
-includes snow tires
Generaly speaking, (I realize it depends on how the car was treated) am I buying more problems than saving money?
Also if you recommend this, is it worth taking to a mechanic? i contacted a mechanic in the car's area (I live about 45 min away from the seller) that seemed to have a good reputation. They said it would cost $100 for the inspection.
Any help would be much apreciated!!!!!
Should I buy a 1980 Honda Civic?
I wouldn't pay $9.00 for it. I doubt it has a 5 speed more likely its a 4 speed or 3 speed. I bet the odometer has rolled over a few more times than that too. Being a 27 yr old Japanese car its probably got more bondo than metal too.

I have a 1980 honda civic that I bought at an abandoned car auction in June. I paid $60 for it and chopped the top off and it has been driving since. It is a five speed like yours and I have taken it on highway trips. It doesn't have much power going up hills, but it averages about 27 mpg. I don't know if I would spend $900 on it, but having older cars is nice because they are easy to mess with and you don't have to worry about emission testing. I'd say don't take it to a mechanic because they are bound to find at least $500 of stuff you could replace if you wanted bring the condition of the car to new. When you go test drive it, see if it drives and stops ok. If it does, figure out a way to get a cut in price.
