I'm a college student and I'm trying to get into the NYU summer program and eventually go to FIT to get a degree in fashion merchandising.

The thing is my parents won't cosign a loan for me because they want me to find cheaper alternatives. I have. But they still refuse to cosign. My mom doesn't want me to leave the state and my dad, well..let's just say lots of talk and no walk. So I'm stuck. I currently go to community college.

Reality is, the stafford loan limits you on how much you can take out, and for usually it's simply not enough for an entire year of school. I have limited credit history and all I want to do is go to school!

Does anyone know any other options. I'm pretty desperate and don't know what to do. My folks arn't giving me much options and I can't seem to find anything except FASFA and the stafford loan which won't be enough. Please help.

Tough situation -- sorry about that. Definitely contact NYU's financial aid office. They'll be the best ones to help you find accessible loans and scholarships. Also check the Fannie Mae and Sallie Mae Foundations to see what their criteria are for college lending.

You will be able to find a regional state school with tuition, fees and books less than that. Get good grades and apply for lots of scholarships. Some 4 year schools even offer special transfer scholarships to those coming in with an associates degree. I worked 30 hours a week for the last three years of my bachelors to pay my rent, gas, groceries...

Normally when you apply for a loan as a 18 or 19 year old and check off that you don't have a cosigner it gets rejected by this one system that almost everyone uses (I forget the name).

There is one website that is run by Chase Bank that does not go through this system and will approve you!

I know of 2 people including myself that were not rejected for a loan without a cosigner.

i was in the same situation as you. i tried bank of america, wachovia, sallie mae, astrive, etc etc etc. noone approved me, so don't bother with them. try myrichuncle.com, they also didn't approve me, but some of my friends have been successful. they take into account more then just your credit history (major, college, gpa, etc). if all else fails, start at nyu part time, go to community part time, and work full time to pay them on a payment plan. i'm doing that, it sucks, but its life. when your credit history matures you can go loan crazy and actually be able to concentrate on school. good luck.
